Valentine's Day Self-Care for Brooklyn’s Holistic Wellness Obsessed

I encourage you to do one or more of the following for self-care this evening:

Deep breathing - Find a comfortable seat or lie down somewhere you won’t be disturbed. Electronics silenced, housemates made aware, slip into a restorative state with simple box breathing. Inhale to the count of four, hold for a count of four, exhale to the count of four and hold here for another count of four. Repeat for five minutes or as long as you can tolerate. Instead of trying to keep your mind absolutely clear, notice what comes up and visualize yourself placing the thought, sensation or compulsion into an imagined container you can come back to later. Give yourself some time to rest with your breath, without urgency.

Art therapy - Do you have some paper and a pen or some sort of medium? Just start doodling like you used to when you were bored in class. Start small and simple and see where it takes you. Even if you’re just running a paintbrush with water over newspaper, noticing the sights and sounds, take this moment in closely and try to express anything that needs to come out with your strokes, lines and negative space. If you’re into this, try starting an art journal or ask about it in our next session!

Moisturize - After washing the day off in a warm shower or bath, be sure to hydrate with water or unsweetened caffeine free beverages. Nourish your skin with natural oils and moisturizers, appreciating the scent, relieving tension from your muscles as you enhance circulation and lymphatic drainage. Notice how it feels to take care of yourself in this small way.

Writing - Write a love letter! No need to be partnered up. Write a love letter to yourself, your future or past self, your best friend, your grandma, your first crush, your favorite artist or comedian. What do you love about them? How do they make you feel? How do you carry them with you for inspiration and connection?
